May 20, 1941 - April 26, 2021
Carol Ann Hronek (nee Shabra), age 79, passed away April 26 after spending time at Holy Family hospice in Parma, where she was well cared for by their amazing team. Carol was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 16 years ago, and despite the many ups and downs, challenges, and confusion, she continued to have many happy times with her friends and family. She spent quality time with her 5 grandchildren, traveled to New Orleans regularly with her trombone playing husband, dancing without a care in the world in the streets of the French quarter. A highlight was her singing "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans", with Hack Bartholomew at Café Du Monde in Jackson Square. Carol had a laid-back way about her and was fun to be around. Even with all the help she needed, Carol could always find the humor and laughed a lot. Carol had many adventures with her husband, Jim, who took care of her in their home until he passed in 2016. Carol worked many years downtown at the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. She was a member of the Cleveland Hiking Club, earning her 5,000-mile patch, hiking all around Cleveland as well as many trips near & far. She was proud of her Cleveland roots and promoted her city wherever she traveled. She & Jim lived in Hinckley for over 30 years, sharing food & music with so many in their jazz barn. We are thankful for all of the family, friends & caregivers who helped support Carol throughout her time with Alzheimer's. Many thanks also to those who were just kind, seeing her situation and showing compassion. It meant so much to our family. Carol's spirit of love & adventure lives on in her friends & family; Carol leaves her daughters Nancy Chester (Steve) & Michele Spatny (Mike), grandchildren Nick (Amanda), Brian, Ryan and Carly, great granddaughter Lilly. Carol's family who passed before her include her parents Mike & Rose Shabra, her husband Jim, her daughter Chris McGinty (Mike) and her grandson Michael. Visitation at Vodrazka funeral home at 6505 Brecksville Rd, Independence, will be Thursday, April 29, from 5 - 8 pm. Funeral mass at St. Anthony of Padua, 6750 State Road, Parma, on Friday, April 30, at 11:00 am. Interment Holy Cross cemetery.
